The Story Behind Idesify: How We Chose Our Name
Choosing a name is one of the most critical decisions when building a startup. It is the cornerstone of your brand identity and the very first impression for future clients. However, in the world of compliance and cybersecurity, the challenge is twofold: the name must not only be memorable, but it must also convey trust, technical solidity, and legal security.
When we began developing our privacy management and identity verification platform, we were looking for a name that encapsulated our mission: to protect companies and their users in the “Privacy Era.” We went from exploring dry legal terms to biometric concepts, before finally inventing something entirely new.
This is how Idesify was born.
The Non-Negotiable Requirements
At the start of the naming process, we established two golden rules:
- It had to reflect our hybrid nature: We are not just a “security” tool, nor just a “legal” one. We are the intersection where identity validation (Liveness, Biometrics) meets regulatory compliance (GDPR, Personal Data Law).
- It had to be a .com domain: As Paul Graham points out, in the world of B2B software, not having the
.comsignals weakness. For a platform aspiring to manage digital identity and ARCO rights for millions of users in Latin America and the world, domain authority was essential.
The Dictionary Approach (and the Reality Check)
We started by searching for dictionary words related to our pillars: identity, truth, privacy, and protection. Our initial list included candidates like “https://www.google.com/search?q=Verify.com”, “Identity.com”, or “Trust.com”.
As expected, these “premium” domains came with six or seven-figure price tags, or simply weren’t for sale. Furthermore, they sounded generic. “Trust” is a vague promise; we needed something that spoke to technical action and compliance.
Creating Compound Words
With single words out of reach, we moved on to combinations. We created two lists:
- Base Concepts: ID, Data, Privacy, Safe, Bio (from biometrics), Face.
- Modifiers: Tech, Hub, Flow, Guard, Check.
Our spreadsheet filled up with options like:
- PrivacyGuard (Sounded like 90s antivirus software).
- IDFlow (Something similar already existed).
- BioCheck (Sounded too medical).
- DataSafe (Too generic).
None of them captured the essence of our value proposition: an “all-in-one” solution that automates everything from consent to facial biometric validation.
The “IFY” Inspiration and the Identity Factor
In a brainstorming session, we reflected on what we actually do. We don’t just “verify” data; we transform manual, risky processes into secure digital flows.
We realized that the core of our product is the ID (Identity). Everything revolves around validating who the user is and managing their rights regarding that identity.
We wanted a word that sounded like “Identify”, but shorter, modern, and proprietary. We played with the suffix “-ify,” which denotes action or transformation (like Shopify or Spotify). Our logic? We wanted to “Ident-ify” the experience, but make it simple and secure.
- Identifly? (Sounded like an airline).
- Idenfy? (Hard to spell).
So, we simplified the root to the absolute basic: ID. And we looked for a phonetic bridge to link ID with IFY.
That is when Idesify emerged.
The central “S” was no accident. It represents Security and Simplification.
ID (Identity) + E (Ecosystem) + S (Security) + IFY
The Acid Test
We subjected “Idesify” to four key criteria:
- Sonority: Phonetically, it is very similar to “Identify,” which helps the user’s brain immediately associate the brand with our main function (identity verification), but with a distinctive twist.
- Availability: The domain idesify.com was free!
- Globality: It works perfectly in English (“Identity Verification”) and Spanish (“Identidad y Seguridad”). Given that we operate with global standards like ISO 30107-3 and local regulations like those in Chile or Mexico, we needed a borderless name.
- Tech Seriousness: It sounds like robust software, which is vital when selling fraud prevention and biometric validation solutions to tech and legal teams.
Making It Ours
Today, Idesify is no longer a word made up on a whiteboard. It is the platform that allows companies to say: “Yes, this person is real, they are alive, and we have legal consent to process their data”.
The name Idesify is our promise: we take the complexity of Identity and Security, and we transform it into something simple.
Welcome to Idesify.
